033 How Do I Get Myself to do What I Want?

I want to share a gift with you that I believe will be of real and ongoing value.  It is especially helpful at the time of year when people make year-end resolutions.   But in fact, it is valuable at any time.

It was extremely helpful to me (and it was mid-year when I got it) and I have continued to use it regularly.   In fact, as I am developing the “coaching” courses to help people get started on their nutritional supplements journey, this will be the first thing we do together.

One of the daily challenges of life is:  “How do I get people – including myself—to do what I want?”   That is a quote from Gretchen Rubin who caught my attention with her Four Tendencies Quiz which reveals if a person is an Upholder, Questioner, Obliger or Rebel.  This is an exciting insight into ourselves.

The reason it caught my attention so quickly is because of the number of times I have helped people figure out which Youngevity products would be best for them and how they should take them.  I knew they needed to be consistent with their nutrition, but it was a struggle to figure out how to get them motivated to be as consistent as they needed to be.

And they needed to get results to realize how much the nutrition was going to help them.  I was always working on helping them set up routines, or habits, or wondering why they didn’t call me back when I tried to check-in.

When I took Gretchen’s “The Four Tendencies Quiz”, I got my results right away.  Boy, she nailed it! I was a “Questioner”. In the Four Tendencies framework, there are 4 categories:  an Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, or Rebel.

The Quiz results fit me like a glove – and I was amazed at how much it helped me understand myself (and others) with regard to when I am being taught a new thing or trying to develop a new habit or system.  I bought her book “Better Than Before” and dove in – excellent insight.

As a Questioner, I learned that if I am going to make a change in my life, I will make it right away but it bothers me when I’m asked to do something for what seems to be an arbitrary reason.  I need to know why, hear from experts, and I will make my own judgment about it, thank you very much! So, for me to create a new habit, it has to make sense to me and fit my goals and be MY decision.

Of course, I now also recognize a Rebel and I have learned not to “tell” them what to do but instead help them reach a place where “they” decide what course is best for them.

So, jump in and learn and grow and benefit ….besides, it’s fun!  Here is the link to The Four Tendencies Quiz:
