She Doesn’t, But You Can

And I rarely do!

As I have previously shared, I so often resonate and appreciate the blogs of Isabel D. Price who I just discovered this year.  But I quickly realized how much I agreed with her health coaching and tips as well as her spiritual encouragement.

And then it happened again with a recent blog of hers – surprise, we had discovered the same thing and I totally agree with her.  She says people ask her “Isabel, do you ever drink alcohol?”  Her simple answer is no, but she says, the reason may surprise you.

And I am in a little different point on that scale, but for many of the same reasons.  I rarely have a glass of wine and have her same reasons plus some.

Her simple answer to why she does not consume alcohol, even on occasion, is that it makes her “feel like garbage” – so much so that it can sometimes take her several days to recover from the few sips of wine she may have had with dinner.

She thought it was just her, but upon checking with some of her friends, she found they had the same experience – complete garbage!  

I have a similar experience but not quite as drastic.  Everyone seemed to so enjoy a glass of wine, talked about how it helps them “unwind” “relax” and they had enjoyable experiences.  So, off and on, I would accept an offered glass of wine.  

Okay, now we are talking about my adult years today – I didn’t seem to have this so much in my college and young adult years.  And I do remember the early marriage years drinking Boone’s Farm Apple Wine which fit both our budget and my taste buds.  Then a few years in the early 80’s of enjoying margaritas and specialty drinks.  

But I am finding in my later years the reactions that Isabel mentioned begin to show up for me to a lesser degree.  As the headaches appeared, I finally narrowed that down to red wine.  But alcohol generally just messed with my system the next day.  And it finally drove me to ask the obvious – “does it taste so good or provide that much enjoyment for me that it is worth the problems I experience?”  The answer was “not really”.  And then I thought about how much sugar and how little nutritional value there was – and it just didn’t seem to make sense.

Isabel added another consideration which I have experienced as well.  When I choose not to consume alcohol, people at times assume it is because I’m a Christian.  And they think I might be judging them negatively if they drink.   I don’t always find out about their assumption right away.  Same with Isabel, she mentioned people assumed the same about her.  

As she shared, I, too, have many Christian friends who enjoy the occasional glass of wine with dinner, or a cold beer on a hot day with the BBQ food smell floating through the air.  We both share the same view that we don’t think there is anything wrong with that.  In fact, I often mention that Jesus’ first miracle was to turn water into wine – and evidently the “best” wine!  

Like so many other good things, the problem is in the excess.  Or, for Isabel and now me, it is in the reaction of my body where the problem lies.   So I think Isabel is on target when she advises in her health category that she recommends 1-2 glasses of wine per week, despite the fact she does not do it herself.  Nor do I.
